History of Seo-gu

History of Seo-gu

During the Three Kingdoms period, Dalgubeol (達句伐) was merged into Silla and named Dalguhwa-hyeon (達句火縣), also known as Dalgubeol or Dalbul. Then, it was renamed to Daegu (大丘) in the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok (757) during Unified Silla. In the 9th year of King Hyeonjong's reign in Goryeo, Daegu was transferred to Gyeongsan-bu (京山府), and in the 21st year of King Injong's reign, a hyeonryeong (county magistrate) was appointed.

In the 1st year of King Sejong in Joseon Dynasty, four hyeons (counties) were integrated and elevated to Daegu-gun (大丘郡), and in the 12th year of King Sejo, it was promoted to Daegu-dohobu (大丘都護府). In the 26th year of King Yeongjo, scholar Lee Ryang-chae appealed for changing the Chinese character for Daegu (from 大丘 to 大邱). During the period of King Jeongjo and King Hyeonjong, both Chinese characters were used interchangeably, but after King Cheoljong, only Daegu (大邱) was used. On May 26, 1895, Daegu-dohobu was renamed to Daegu-bu (大邱府). Then, in accordance with the Local Autonomy Act in Aug. 15, 1949, Daegu-bu was renamed to Daegu-si (大邱市). On Jul. 1, 1981, Daegu-si was promoted to a direct-controlled city, and on Jan. 1, 1995, its name was changed to Daegu Metropolitan City. On Mar. 1, 1995, the entire Dalseong-gun regions were incorporated into Daegu Metropolitan City.

Seo-gu was established as Daegu-bu Seobu Branch Office (西部出張所) on Nov. 2, 1938, in accordance with the ordinance for branch office establishment. On Aug. 15, 1949, with the implementation of the Local Autonomy Act, it was renamed to Daegu-si Seobu Branch Office (西部出張所), and on Jan. 1, 1963, it was promoted to Seo-gu with the implementation of the district system.

On Jul. 1, 1983, a new district office building was constructed and moved to its current location. On Jan. 1, 1988, Dalseo-gu was newly established, and Seongdang-dong and all of Seongso regions, and certain parts of Naedang-dong were incorporated into Dalseo-gu. Then, after elevation as an autonomous district on May 1, 1988, Seo-gu began performing as a full-fledged local government.
